Background of the Study

Libraries serve as critical resources for academic institutions, providing access to a vast array of information and knowledge essential for educational pursuits and research activities (Eze, 2016). Over the years, the role of libraries has evolved, adapting to technological advancements and changes in user needs. Despite these advancements, the security of library resources remains a paramount concern. Security breaches can lead to the loss of valuable materials, which in turn hampers educational and research activities (Agyekum & Filson, 2015).

The Sa'adu Zungur University in Bauchi, like many other academic institutions, faces challenges related to the security of its library resources. Ensuring compliance with library security measures is crucial to safeguarding these resources. The study focuses on the compliance levels among 400-level students of Chemistry Education during the 2023-2024 session.

Library security encompasses various aspects, including physical security, digital security, and policy enforcement (Adeyemi, 2018). Physical security involves measures such as surveillance systems, access control, and the presence of security personnel. Digital security includes protecting digital resources from cyber threats, ensuring the integrity of digital records, and managing access to electronic databases (Afolabi & Oladokun, 2017).

Compliance with library security measures is influenced by several factors, including awareness, attitudes, and the perceived importance of these measures (Oyewusi & Oyeboade, 2015). For students, compliance is often linked to their understanding of the consequences of non-compliance and their personal responsibility in preserving library resources (Nkiko & Yusuf, 2016). Therefore, it is essential to investigate the factors influencing compliance and identify strategies to enhance adherence to security protocols.

The Chemistry Education program at Sa'adu Zungur University is one of the institution's flagship programs, attracting a significant number of students each year. The 400-level students, being in their final year, are expected to have a comprehensive understanding of library resources and the importance of maintaining their security. This study aims to assess their compliance with library security measures, identify gaps, and suggest improvements (Smith & Hansen, 2019).

Academic libraries are essential for supporting the curriculum, fostering research, and enhancing the overall educational experience. They provide access to textbooks, journals, research papers, and digital resources that are crucial for academic success (Tella et al., 2020). The loss or damage of these resources can significantly impact the learning process and academic performance of students (Olanlokun & Adekanye, 2017).

The study is anchored on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), which posits that an individual's behavior is influenced by their intention to perform the behavior, which in turn is affected by their attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control (Ajzen, 1991). In the context of library security compliance, TPB can help in understanding how students' attitudes towards security measures, the influence of their peers and lecturers, and their perceived ability to comply with these measures affect their actual compliance behavior (Fishbein & Ajzen, 2015).

Understanding the factors that influence library security compliance among students can help in developing targeted interventions to improve compliance rates. This includes educational programs to raise awareness about the importance of library security, training sessions to enhance students' skills in using security technologies, and policy reforms to create a more secure library environment (Johnson & Sipe, 2016).

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The security of library resources is a significant concern for academic institutions, including Sa'adu Zungur University, Bauchi. Despite the implementation of various security measures, there have been instances of resource loss and damage, indicating potential gaps in compliance among users (Ogbomo & Ogbo, 2015). This problem is particularly pertinent among final-year students who frequently use the library for research and study purposes.

The Chemistry Education program at Sa'adu Zungur University has a high enrollment rate, with 400-level students relying heavily on library resources to complete their final projects and prepare for exams. However, there is limited empirical evidence on their compliance with library security measures. This gap in knowledge hinders the development of effective strategies to enhance compliance and ensure the security of library resources (Uzuegbu & Mbajiorgu, 2019).

Non-compliance with library security measures can lead to the loss of valuable materials, increased costs for resource replacement, and a negative impact on the academic performance of students. It is therefore crucial to understand the factors influencing compliance among 400-level Chemistry Education students and to develop targeted interventions to address these issues (Popoola, 2017).

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The primary objectives of this study are:

  1. To assess the level of compliance with library security measures among 400-level Chemistry Education students at Sa'adu Zungur University, Bauchi.

  2. To identify the factors influencing compliance with library security measures.

  3. To evaluate the effectiveness of existing library security policies and practices.

  4. To suggest strategies for improving compliance with library security measures.

  5. To enhance the overall security of library resources at Sa'adu Zungur University, Bauchi.

1.4 Research Questions

Based on the objectives of the study, the following research questions are formulated:

  1. What is the current level of compliance with library security measures among 400-level Chemistry Education students?

  2. What are the main factors influencing their compliance with library security measures?

  3. How effective are the existing library security policies and practices at Sa'adu Zungur University, Bauchi?

  4. What strategies can be implemented to improve compliance with library security measures?

  5. How can the overall security of library resources be enhanced at Sa'adu Zungur University, Bauchi?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

The study will test the following hypotheses:

H1: There is a significant relationship between students' awareness of library security measures and their compliance levels.

H2: Students' attitudes towards library security significantly affect their compliance with security measures.

H3: Peer influence has a significant impact on students' compliance with library security measures.

H4: The perceived importance of library resources influences students' compliance with security measures.

H5: The effectiveness of existing library security policies is significantly related to the compliance levels of students.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The significance of this study can be viewed from both practical and theoretical perspectives.

Practical Significance:

Improving Security Measures: The findings from this study will provide valuable insights into the effectiveness of current library security measures at Sa'adu Zungur University, Bauchi. This will help in identifying gaps and weaknesses in the existing system and suggest improvements to enhance the security of library resources.

Informing Policy Development: The study will contribute to the development of evidence-based policies and practices aimed at improving library security compliance among students. This can lead to the formulation of more effective strategies to safeguard library resources and reduce instances of resource loss and damage.

Enhancing Student Awareness and Compliance: By identifying the factors that influence compliance, the study can help in designing targeted educational programs and training sessions to raise awareness among students about the importance of library security and how they can contribute to it.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on the compliance with library security measures among 400-level students of Chemistry Education at Sa'adu Zungur University, Bauchi, during the 2023-2024 academic session. The scope includes assessing the level of compliance, identifying influencing factors, and suggesting strategies for improvement.

Limitations:

Sample Size: The study is limited to 400-level Chemistry Education students, which may not represent the compliance behavior of students from other departments or academic levels.

Time Constraints: The study is conducted within a specific academic session, which may limit the ability to observe long-term trends in compliance behavior.

Self-Reported Data: The reliance on self-reported data through surveys may introduce biases, as students might overestimate their compliance levels.

Despite these limitations, the study aims to provide valuable insights into library security compliance and contribute to the development of effective strategies to enhance the security of library resources.
